UB Faculty Member quoted in TIME Magazine

Marcus Bursik, UB professor of geology and expert on volcanic ash clouds, was quoted in a TIME Magazine story that described how an Icelandic volcano closed European air space for a week. "It was an eruption at the right place at the right time. Or, I guess, really, the other way around," he said. http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1983887,00.html

UB Faculty Member quoted in the Philadelphia Inquirer

Michael Sheridan, UB professor emeritus of geology and founder of UB's Center for Geohazards Studies, was quoted in a Philadelphia Inquirer story, noting that the history of Icelandic volcanoes "doesn't bode well for the present."  http://www.philly.com/inquirer/front_page/20100423_Iceland_a_hot_spot_of_volcanic_activity.html

UB Faculty Member quoted on national news

A story on National Public Radio's Morning Edition at http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=126094135 and in USA Today http://www.usatoday.com/tech/science/2010-04-19-1Avolcano19_CV_N.htm that discussed the volcanic ash cloud that has halted air traffic throughout Europe for days quoted Marcus Bursik, UB professor of geology and a leading expert on volcanic ash cloud transport. Bursik discussed his recent research showing that volcanic plumes tend to end up in the jetstream and remain there, thus disrupting air traffic. He also was quoted in Newsweek online http://blog.newsweek.com/blogs/thehumancondition/archive/2010/04/16/smoked-out-why-volcanic-ash-and-planes-fight-for-the-same-small-air-space.aspx, which mentioned Bursik's work with Alaskan researchers to develop better tracking methods for these clouds.

Faculty Member, Dr, Tracy K.P. Gregg is on the GRUVEE Cruise.  A month-long research cruise on the research vessel, Atlantis, to the Galapagos Spreading Center to investigate exactly how lava erupts at an intermediate spreading-rate mid-ocean ridge. We'll be trying to figure out how big, how fast, and how long the eruptions are. http://www.gruveecruise.org/GRUVEEeducation/Home.html

International Geological Masters in Volcanology and Geotechniques

The Department of Geology at the University at Buffalo has recently received funding for a new international graduate program in the geosciences. INVOGE (International Geological Masters in Volcanology and Geotechniques) is a dual master's research program that will allow students to pursue an internationally recognized master's degree both at institutions in the United States and abroad. The program is co-sponsored by the University at Buffalo and Michigan Technological University in the United States and Blaise Pascal and Milan-Bicocca Universities in France and Italy.  http://www.geohazards.buffalo.edu/research/invoge/
