Students entering the Ph.D. program
are expected to hold a BS in Geology (MS Recommended). Students applying with
other science or engineering degrees must have 12 credits in geology beyond
the introductory level and a Geological
Field Course or must complete these courses during their masters program.
The Ph.D. advisor may require additional prerequisites depending upon the
course of study.
The Ph.D. student must advance successfully through:
- The PhD requires 72 credit hours of graduate coursework including 24 formal course credits. Required courses are determined by the advisor and the student which will support the student's research.
- Qualifying Exam: the student must prepare two proposals, one of which normally becomes the Dissertation Proposal
- Technical Defense: the student presents the research results for detailed scrutiny
